the Butler mirror
This commissioned mirror was designed and made for a specific placement in a South London flat - a wall on the landing of the entry hall staircase. The mirror is positioned opposite a framed abstract painting, an oil on panel, by Richard Butler (1921 - 2005). The mirror is named after the artist.
The starting point for this unique design is based on our hand painted strip mirrors. In choosing the colours for this hall mirror we worked carefully with our client to pick those which would compliment, rather than distract, from the vivid painting. This commission differs in various ways from our other strip mirrors and is a good illustration of how our standard designs are open to customisation.
In this case we made a tray type frame in solid beech wood. The polished edge, 4mm mirrored glass panel, appears to float within the pink coloured interior. This design also incorporates other unique details - the corners of the beech frame have two contrasting walnut plugs set on a diagonal. This detail echos the screws on the corners of the painting's original frame, which was hand made by the artist. As our client used paint from Farrow & Ball in the hallway, we both decided to use colours from their range for the facing strips on the frame.
Set in a spiral, they are Card Room Green, Lichen, Vert de Terre and Mizzle. The fifth colour was used for the tray frame interior,
a lovely dusty pink - Cinder Rose. Slide number six shows the colour sample strips presented to our client at the location.
This unique mirror is signed and dated on the reverse. Size: 1350 x 550 x 32mm. Weight: 10kg.
